Arguement: legalizing marijuana

Assertion/Claim (Topic Sentence) = Main Idea
  • Marijuana should be legalized
Evidence -Concrete Detail:
  • legalizing marijuana would make it easier for terminal illness patients such as those who suffer from cancer, eating disorders, insomnia etc deal with symptoms of their disease
    • Commentary 1: the THC in marijuana reduces vomiting and nausea which can be useful to cancer patients who are going through chemotheropy. it also alleviates pretreatment anxiety.
    • Commentary 2: marijuana also helps to improve anorexia patients with their appetites. the THC in the marijuana is chemicaly similar to the chemical in the body that tells the stomach that the persons stomach is empty. Being chemically similar it binds to the "hunger" receptor which stimulates the same signal cascade which fools the brain into thinking the toker is hungry
  • marijuana is less addictive than many legal drugs
    • Commentary 1: Contrary to common belief marijuana is not a gateway drug and according to studies by the FDA and other organizations is less addictive than cigarettes which are shown to be more addictive than cocaine.
    • Commentary 2:  I know several people who toke everyday but it is not the marijuana they are addicted to it is simply the fact that everything is more enjoyable after partaking in a doob or a bowl. Some may call that addiction and they may be right but if so it's comparable to someone being addicted to coke, it's not the caffeine it's simply they enjoy the taste.

Opposing Claims/They Say:
  • They say marijuana is a gateway drug
  •  They say marijuana is illegal because it is dangerous
My Rebuttal/I Say:
  • Although I agree with these statements to a certain degree I cannot in good concious accept their conclusion. True for some marijuana may open the doors to harder drugs but you cannot blame that on the marijuana it is the choice of the user as to what drugs they use of their own free will. marijuana was not prohibited because of fear of the short list of common sense dangers it entails but from fear of immigrants being attracted in hopes of transporting the herb into the country and a pheasable excuse for deportation in the early to mid 1930's
My Paragraph
Legalizing marijuana would make it easier for terminal illness patients such as those who suffer from cancer, eating disorders, insomnia etc deal with symptoms of their disease.
The THC in marijuana reduces vomiting and nausea which can be useful to cancer patients who are going through chemotheropy. It also alleviates pretreatment anxiety. Marijuana also helps to improve anorexia patients with their appetites. The THC in the marijuana is chemicaly similar to the chemical in the body that tells the stomach that the persons stomach is empty. Being chemically similar it binds to the "hunger" receptor which stimulates the same signal cascade which fools the brain into thinking the toker is hungry. Marijuana is less addictive than many legal drugs. Contrary to common belief marijuana is not a gateway drug and according to studies by the FDA and other organizations is less addictive than cigarettes which are shown to be more addictive than cocaine.  I know several people who toke everyday but it is not the marijuana they are addicted to it is simply the fact that everything is more enjoyable after partaking in a doob or a bowl. Some may call that addiction and they may be right but if so it's comparable to someone being addicted to coke, it's not the caffeine it's simply they enjoy the taste.

My Thinking:
my thinking is inductive because it is likely they will legalize marijuana but it is not certain
